Marina Herlop: Pripyat

Sound Unwrapped

Making her full band UK debut, we are delighted to welcome Catalan artist Marina Herlop to Kings Place as part of Sound Unwrapped.

Marina Herlop might be best known as a classically-trained pianist, but her music goes far beyond her beginnings. The Catalan artist took a stylistic leap on her third album – the PAN-released Pripyat – subverting the piano and vocals of her first two albums with computer-aided electronics and unsettling three-dimensional effects. She was influenced by the vast possibilities of her voice, aiming to unhook it from Western training, looking to South Indian Carnatic music for direction. The result is a sound that bends pop music’s often rigid framework, breaking classical traditions and surprising at every turn.

“Evoking Björk’s mischievous vocal tampering… Herlop leans into a thrilling sense of play and invention.” Pitchfork

Co-presented with Eat Your Own Ears.

About Aga Ujma:

Guest support on this show will be Aga Ujma, a Polish-born multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and composer who mixes her classical music upbringing and folk influences from Poland with traditional music studies at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts in Surakarta, Central Java and SOAS University of London, sprinkled with an experimental approach in singing and creating her songs.

“Shaping up to be a wholly unique experience, placing her at the cutting edge of folk music in Britain” – The Line of Best Fit
