Dame Evelyn Glennie joins the O/Modernt Quartet with Hugo Ticciati, Daniel Rowland, Gareth Lubbe and Julian Arp for a programme that explodes, condenses and stretches time.
While Janáček compresses an entire opera into his coruscating Kreutzer Sonata quartet, and Áskell Másson’s high-velocity Frum hurls a stream of rhythmic events at the listener, Golijov’s Tenebrae opens up twilit, contemplative space. While in his Grosse Fuge Beethoven tussles mightily with complex harmony and cross-rhythms, James Tenney’s Having never written a note for percussion explores just a single pitch.
The evening ends with a new arrangement of Albert Schnelzer’s dynamic Apollonian Dances for percussion and string quartet, specially commissioned for Time Unwrapped.
