Skills Development at Kings Place

At Kings Place we’re committed to nurturing talent across our teams, as well as helping develop tomorrow’s cultural workforce. Some examples include creating apprenticeships, hosting or participating in careers fairs, and providing direct training to upskill our staff. Often this involves partnering with Islington Council and local employability agencies or charities.

Below you can read more about how training and skills development shape our work.

Backstage pathways

Within our Technical team, training and skills development play a particularly vital role. For some junior team members Kings Place is their first professional performing arts role, and we offer wide-ranging opportunities to develop their knowledge across sound, lighting, stage management, audiovisual and more.

This work has an important impact for our sector, with junior team members often going on to build careers in specialised technical roles across music, theatre and other live arts.

Our training creates unique pathways for those joining our House Crew to later become technicians, stage managers and production duty managers. This training can span mic dressing, AV, stage management, sound, lighting, recording, streaming, editing, vision mixing and more.

Facts and figures:

  • Around 30 technical staff receive direct training to expand their skill set each year, totalling over 200 hours.
  • Around 300 hours per year of paid shadowing team offered each year for staff to learn from more senior technicians and managers.
  • Nearly a quarter of our current technical team were trained in their current roles from scratch at Kings Place.
  • Another quarter have received extensive training from us to become cross-skilled in different roles.
  • The majority of our Production Duty Managers were upskilled into those roles after joining as House Crew members.

Soundscape

Soundscape is a ground-breaking 360-degree audio system developed by d&b audiotechnik. Our Hall Two was among the first UK venues to have the system installed. We work directly with d&b to train our sound technicians so they can deliver immersive live events on the system.

To date has included over 275 hours of training and support for our team:

  • SSF (System and Software Fundamental) training.
  • Joint sessions with the ICA to share knowledge and training.
  • Operational training.
  • Shadow shifts and ongoing support.
